A few years ago, the slogan for National Children's Book Week was, "any time is book time." The poster showed a jungle scene with a monkey hanging from a branch, book in hand; an elephant, book in trunk; and other animals in literary bliss.

I hope readers keep in mind that a good book is a good book. So, if you can't read today's Women's History Month selection by March 31, don't forget about it.

The best thing about this book is how much ground it covers. Contributions of well-known pioneers of social change and women's rights such as Jane Addams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida B. Wells, Clara Barton and Emma Goldman are explained and acknowledged. Women who don't normally have starring roles in history and reference books are included, too. Readers meet:

-- M. Carey Thomas, a teenager growing up in Baltimore during the 1850s. Passages from her diary reveal her determination to get an education during a time when few women attended college.

-- Grace Cloud, an 11-year-old Cherokee girl who set up camp with her family in Oklahoma in 1838 after crossing the country on the Trail of Tears.

-- Sophia Langston, a 30-year old black woman who helped her husband found an all-black town in Oklahoma in 1894.

Besides biographical and historical information, the book discusses how fashion magazines and all-female pop music groups and sports teams have affected women's images.
