Switzerland Point Middle School's annual pet food drive was a huge success.

"We are pleased to have brought in 8,250 pounds of dry dog and cat food for the St. Johns County Animal Shelter, along with collecting cash in the amount of $2,500," said teacher David Pomerantz. "This year, the drive not only helped feed the animals in St. Johns, but we also raised money for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit Division."

One goal for the drive was to be able to buy a bulletproof vest and a heat alarm for a K-9 patrol car.

"These trained dogs come in danger on a daily basis," Pomerantz said. "The vest could very well be the difference in saving these most cherished sheriff's partners."

After a check presentation March 15, sheriff's deputies, K-9 officers and their dogs walked the halls of the school for students to see.
