The New Orleans Saits needed help at defensive end in a big way, and that's certainly what they got in the first round of the NFL Draft yesterday.

The Saints took Georgia's Charles Grant -- who at 6-foot-3, 282 pounds becomes one of the bigger defensive ends in the NFL -- with their second first-round selection, the 25th overall pick. New Orleans took another Southeastern Conference player, Tennessee wide receiver Donte Stallworth, with the 13th overall pick.

The Saints needed help at end because Joe Johnson is an unrestricted free agent and likely will not be back with New Orleans.

Grant was the only player from the state selected through the first 12 picks of the second round yesterday. Still on the board were such prominent players as Georgia Southern running back Adrian Peterson, Georgia Tech wide receiver Kelly Campbell and Georgia tight end Randy McMichael.

Peterson, rated as the seventh best running bacy by The Sporting News, has been projected as a third-round pick. …
