Grant Gives Saints Help They Needed GSU's Peterson Waiting

The New Orleans Saits needed help at defensive end in a big way, and that's certainly what they got in the first round of the NFL Draft yesterday.

The Saints took Georgia's Charles Grant -- who at 6-foot-3, 282 pounds becomes one of the bigger defensive ends in the NFL -- with their second first-round selection, the 25th overall pick. New Orleans took another Southeastern Conference player, Tennessee wide receiver Donte Stallworth, with the 13th overall pick.

"He's going to be a good player," Saints General Manager Randy Mueller said on "Very few defensive ends come out of college ball that can play the run and the pass. This guy can play both."

Grant excelled in stuffing the run at Georgia, compiling 136 tackles during his career. And he was a solid pass-rusher as well, totaling 15 sacks. His draft stock rose in recent weeks as teams became intrigued with his potential after a workout that included a 4.69 40-yard dash, a 31-inch vertical jump, and a 355-pound bench press.

Grant has good speed for his size, as well. Scouts liked his ability to run down plays, and he has a reputation as a player who never quits on a play. His ability to recognize run or pass, his quickness and tackling ability also impressed scouts.

The Saints needed help at end because Joe Johnson is an unrestricted free agent and likely will not be back with New Orleans.

Grant was the only player from the state selected through the first 12 picks of the second round yesterday. Still on the board were such prominent players as Georgia Southern running back Adrian Peterson, Georgia Tech wide receiver Kelly Campbell and Georgia tight end Randy McMichael.

Peterson, rated as the seventh best running bacy by The Sporting News, has been projected as a third-round pick. …
