Jaguars Can't Afford to Pass on Harrington

Article excerpt

The Jaguars clearly have great need at the tackle positions on both sides of the ball, but if Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington is still on the board when it's their turn to pick at No. 9, they should call an audible.

It'd be a gutsy call, but I think coach Tom Coughlin has to pull the trigger and take Harrington. It's very rare that a team selecting at the bottom of the top 10 gets a chance to have such a highly regarded quarterback.

Harrington would have the benefit of learning from Mark Brunell, who says sitting the bench as Brett Favre's backup for two years in Green Bay was an asset in his career. Since the Jaguars couldn't afford to sign a legitimate backup, why not grab a quarterback who may have more value than any other that might become available to them in the next two or three years?

Unless another team makes an incredible trade offer to get to the No. 9 spot so it can take Harrington, the Jaguars should keep him for themselves. Given what they've gotten out of Brunell and Rob Johnson (which led to a trade and the drafting of Fred Taylor), going after Pac-10 Conference quarterbacks has been a good strategy. . . .

Albert Haynesworth, Tennessee's 20-year-old defensive tackle, won't need a limo like R. Jay Soward to pick him up to get to practice. . . . If nothing else, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia all have promising futures as waiters. The room service they provided for Tiger Woods in the final round of the Masters was excellent. . . . Biggest stink about the Masters was CBS conveniently forgetting to mention the stench hovering over Augusta National Golf Club after the course took on so much rain. …
