LONDON IS A city that thrives on change. Much of its pre-eminence in global finance is based on its ability to build new buildings that respond to new needs. But its success is also based on its rich history. One reason why London has an edge over cities like Frankfurt is that it's a lot more interesting to walk the streets here than elsewhere. We have a city not only of Wren churches and Georgian squares, but also of hidden places, medieval curiosities, high tech offices and mighty Victorian engineering works. For this reason we welcome the Prince of Wales's opposition, eloquently stated on this page, to the needless destruction of Bishopsgate Goodsyard in the East End. Few people will know this vast building, as it has been largely under wraps for decades, but its vaulted interior is one of the great hidden spaces of London. It has the potential to be a magnificent popular asset for the whole of the city, as well as for the diverse local community at Spitalfields. …
