The long-promised contract extension for Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin still isn't done, although it's on his desk and awaiting his signature.

"It's mostly me," Coughlin said yesterday. "[Owner Wayne Weaver] and I have an agreement. It's just a matter of sitting down and going through the details."

Weaver promised Coughlin a one-year extension on Jan. 4, the same day Steve Spurrier resigned at the University of Florida. Weaver later said he made the offer to end speculation that Spurrier would be hired to replace Coughlin.

Coughlin already is signed through 2003 at a reported $2.4 million per year.


WR Keenan McCardell and MLB Hardy Nickerson are still on the roster but won't participate in this weekend's minicamp. Both are expected to be released after June 1 for salary-cap reasons.

McCardell, who already is attracting interest from Kansas City and Tampa Bay, wasn't the only familiar face missing at Alltel Stadium yesterday. Some remaining veterans had a hard time comprehending that such stalwarts as Tony Boselli, Gary Walker, Kevin Hardy and Seth Payne aren't around anymore, either.

"It's different," quarterback Mark Brunell said. "Obviously, guys who played here for a number of years are elsewhere, but that's the way it is. We've just got to find the young guys with the bright futures."

How baby-faced are the Jaguars? Sixty-three of the 97 players on their roster are age 25 years or younger, including three 21-year-olds.


Fourth-round pick David Garrard apologized to Brunell for getting a little ahead of himself last weekend.
