Chase, Crash, Arrest Man Wanted in Sex Assault

A Jacksonville police chase through Southside and San Marco yesterday concluded with the arrest of a knife-wielding man wanted in a sexual assault case.

The chase began about 4:45 p.m. when police went to the man's neighborhood to find him.

Sheriff's Lt. J.G. Coxen Jr. said the man noticed police and he sped off in a truck. Speeds exceeded 60 mph on Philips Highway, Coxen said, and the pursuit led as many as 10 officers onto San Jose Boulevard, University Boulevard and Emerson Street.

The chase continued toward downtown on Hendricks Avenue, where the driver found police and a road closed for train track maintenance.

Several workers doing repairs to the railroad crossing said they saw the truck coming quickly toward them followed by multiple police cars.

Police said the man tried to turn left onto Cedar Street, a narrow, two-lane road in San Marco. But "stop sticks" thrown by police during the chase had shredded three of the Ford pickup's tires, and the truck twisted onto its passenger side. …
