Most of Sherry Drive Roadwork about to End -- Finally

The lengthy roadwork on Sherry Drive will end in two weeks, although construction of a new manhole by BellSouth will prevent Atlantic Beach from opening the street to southbound traffic until the end of the month.

The contractor, Calloway Construction, began paving Sherry Drive this week, the last major step in a project that began last July. During the next two weeks, the contractor will also put in sodding and finish up some regrading and sidewalk work on the street.

Calloway Construction will not pave the first block of Sherry Drive because Bell South is building a new manhole at Sherry Drive and Atlantic Boulevard near the Famous Amos Restaurant. Once the work is completed, BellSouth will pave the block.

To prevent traffic accidents and expedite the work, Atlantic Beach will continue to restrict southbound traffic on the road until BellSouth is finished, said Public Works Director Bob Kosoy.

The $1.4 million project consisted of upgrading the water lines and installing a main line that will drain storm water from Ahern through Eighth streets into Sherry Drive then through Howell Park into the city's lagoon system.

The city also installed curbs and gutters in some areas of the street, except in front of Community Presbyterian Church and Atlantic Beach Elementary, which will not have the curbs and gutters to allow for more parking space.

The road near the school and the church were in turn designed to take storm water into a catch basin to prevent flooding.

Work on the project was supposed to end in January but a series of unexpected events delayed the project's end until this month. …
