4 Top Teachers Awarded $10,000 for Dedication

As teachers, they've inspired hundreds of Duval County students. They teach English and history but have provided lessons that inspire students to take risks and do their very best.

Yesterday, four teachers were thanked for their dedication with the Gladys Prior Awards for Career Teaching Excellence. Each will receive a $10,000 check during ceremonies next week.

This year's winners are:

-- William Babcock, a history teacher at The Bolles School.

-- Jane Feber, an English teacher at Mandarin Middle.

-- Sandra McCoy, an English teacher at Mandarin High.

-- Beverly McMillan, an eighth-grade teacher and vice principal at St. Pius V Parish School.

The winners were selected by a committee of school administrators, teachers and university professors.

The award was established by Gilchrist Berg, the founder of a Jacksonville-based investment company, to honor Gladys Prior, a fourth-grade teacher who inspired Berg as a student at Ortega Elementary.

Four awards are given annually to teachers who have been working for at least 10 years in Duval County's public or private schools. The winners may do what they wish with the money.

Teachers are nominated by students, alumni, parents and colleagues. The College of Education and Human Services at the University of North Florida administers the awards.

In each case, the winners were described as teachers whose lessons continue to impact students years after they leave their classroom.

WILLIAM BABCOCK

After 42 years of teaching, Babcock still loves his job.

"I am blessed with super kids," he said.

Former students say they are the ones blessed.

In nominating Babcock for the award, former students thanked him for treating them as an equal.

Babcock, they said, always found the time to talk with students about government and politics. …
