Delaney Urges Us to Park It

Article excerpt

Jacksonville Mayor John Delaney on Friday unveiled Get Out There, a new initiative aimed at encouraging residents to visit the parks throughout Jacksonville.

To kick off the campaign, activities are being offered at 21 parks during the Memorial Day weekend.

"Jacksonville has the largest urban park system in the United States and the people who live here should enjoy all that our parks have to offer," Delaney said at a luncheon event kicking off the initiative.

The Get Out There campaign includes a summer fun guide, a 12-page publication with information on swimming pools, playgrounds, athletic leagues and other park features. The guide is free and available at parks throughout Jacksonville, at City Hall at St. James, the City Hall Annex, public libraries, community centers and other locations where Neighborhoods magazine is distributed.

"Whether it's hiking, kayaking or swimming, we've got something for you at our parks," Delaney said. "We're blessed to live in a community rich in natural resources accented by great weather year-round."

The mayor also showed renderings of future parks. As part of Delaney's Preservation Project, 55,000 acres of land have been purchased and the purchase of another 20,000 acres is in the works. Delaney said the next step is to develop these parks with educational centers, boat ramps, and hiking trails for people to enjoy.

Activities will be held at 21 parks over Memorial Day weekend, including:

BLUE CYPRESS 4012 University Blvd. Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
