Sir Christopher's Cue to Hang Up at Vodafone?; City Comment

I WROTE last August that it would not surprise me if Sir Christopher Gent were soon to leave Vodafone. There was no particular hint then that he might be heading for the exit, but it was evident that the market had fallen out of love with his company's shares.

That weakness raised the question of whether the man who drove Vodafone to be the Western world's most powerful mobile phone company was also the man to lead it through and out of the current crisis which has seen its shares shrink to one quarter of the value they were at their peak.

The suggestion was premature, but, as with Stephen Byers, such stories also have a habit of coming right in the end. Hence the need to return to the subject because with yesterday's figures out of the way the word once again in the industry is that Vodafone may be on the lookout for a new chief executive.

Indeed, some people believe that Vodafone chairman Sir Ian MacLaurin is convinced of this himself. …
