Now Labour MPs Call for Campbell to Quit

LABOUR MPs today broke ranks to demand the resignation of Downing Street communications chief Alastair Campbell in the growing row over Tony Blair's role at the Queen Mother's lying-instate.

Veteran Tam Dalyell and former Treasury minister Denzil Davies spoke out amid new claims that Buckingham Palace intervened to stop the Prime Minister grabbing the limelight at the ceremony at Westminster Hall in April.

In a key U-turn yesterday, No10 admitted for the first time that its officials might have created the impression that they were trying to bolster Mr Blair's role.

The row has centred on up to 15 phone calls between Downing Street and Black Rod Sir Michael Willcocks, the Parliamentary official in charge of the ceremony, whose account of the events is understood to differ sharply from No10's.

Fresh claims today alleged that Mr Blair's aides also contacted Buckingham Palace over the Prime Minister's plan to walk from Downing Street to the Palace of Westminster to greet the cortege. …
