More doom and gloom at The Independent on Sunday following the resignation of news editor Peter Victor. After other high-profile recent defections - political editor Colin Brown is working out his notice and Anne McElvoy, the executive editor, left a few weeks ago - the popular Victor's departure poses a huge dilemma for the Sindie's editor Tristan Davies. It is already the most understaffed paper in Fleet Street and Victor was known to be increasingly unhappy about attempting to bring a paper out with so few reporters. He quit without a new job to go to. "Morale is at rock bottom," an Indie toiler says. "We simply can't go on like this, with the feeling that the proprietor and management have no confidence in the paper at all."

Having admitted last week that pregnancy has prevented her doing her job properly, Radio 4 Today programme presenter Sarah Montague will shortly go off on maternity leave for several months. There are persistent rumours that she may not return and will be moved to other duties after her child is born.

The smart money inside the Corp is for her to be replaced by Martha Kearney.

After informal discussions, Kearney is said to be weighing up the move. On the one hand, she would obtain a higher profile.

On the other, the hours are ghastly and she would have to give up presenting her own Woman's Hour programme.

Alone among independent broadcasters, Channel 5 has made no public comment on the Government's broadcasting White Paper published more than a month ago, though it is known to have strong objections. Why the silence? The same reason that has prompted the channel once known as Station Smut to emphasise its serious and responsible side by hosting a series of breakfasts recently at the Tate Modern for the great and the good in the arts world - it is negotiating the renewal of its five-yearlong licence with the Government. …
