A 51-year-old Southside man was arrested Sunday on a warrant for grand theft after police said he and an unidentified woman stole four large diamond rings from the Zales jewelry store at The Avenues mall March 4.

Police said the man and a woman in her 20s walked into the store at 2:30 p.m. March 4 and asked to look at some rings, all around 1 to 2 carats in weight. As the woman was looking, police said she dropped her purse, distracting the lone salesperson enough that the man could reach over the counter and grab four rings. The couple ran into the crowded mall and disappeared, police said.

Police said they learned a similar theft happened at the Zales store at the Orange Park Mall around the same time. Clay County Sheriff's Office detectives showed the saleswoman a photographic spread March 14, and she picked out a man. A Duval County judge issued an arrest warrant April 17.

An alert police officer said he saw the man's car in a motel parking lot at 8285 Dix Ellis Trail at 8:35 p.m. Sunday and found him inside.

Following are the crimes and other incidents reported recently on the Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office:

-- A stereo speaker was stolen from a car in the apartment complex at 10023 Belle Rive Blvd. after someone smashed a window around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the owner heard his car alarm go off and got outside in time to see a large maroon Chevrolet or Ford drive off from a parking spot next to his car. A second break-in at the complex saw someone steal 144 compact discs from another car between 11 p.m. Sunday and 7:25 a.m. Tuesday after prying open a window. Police also reported an attempted auto burglary, when someone sliced open a convertible top between 5:30 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. the next day and rifled through the car's contents without stealing anything.

-- A 47-year-old Southside woman was arrested at 5:30 p.m. June 17 on a charge of auto burglary after she was seen breaking into a small sports utility in the 5800 block of University Blvd. …
