Baptist Awaits Word for New Facility on I-95

Baptist Health executives are taking steps toward developing a proposed Southside hospital as they await an administrative law judge's order in the wake of regulatory hearings that ended last week.

Baptist has proposed a five-story, 125-bed hospital at Gran Park at Jacksonville at southeast Interstate 95 and St. Augustine Road. It is one of several proposed hospital developments around town.

In December, the state Agency for Health Care Administration granted approval for the Baptist hospital and several other projects in Jacksonville. However, soon after that, the hospitals challenged each other's projects. Those challenges went into a Division of Administrative Hearings process.

Baptist Health research analyst Chad Reece said this week that those hearings concluded last week and the hospitals await an administrative judge's order that would recommend upholding approval or that would deny any of the proposals. He said that decision could come late this fall.

As Baptist waits, it continues to file plans with the city for the proposed Baptist Medical Center South. "We're trying to keep things moving," Reece said.

The proposed $84.4 million hospital would go up on 31.9 acres in Gran Park.

Along with a 248,567-square-foot hospital, plans also show a proposed 80,000-square-foot office building that Reece said would house physicians' offices. Reece said that building would comprise four floors, although not many details have been decided about that part of the project.

Reece said the hospital would open with 92 beds and include the ability to increase that. Pending approvals, Reece said, construction would take 18 months.

Reece has said that the hospital would start with 300 employees, of which 200 would be transferred from within the Baptist system and 100 would be new. …
