Police Officers Attacked 3 Southside Cases Tough on Enforcers
Byline: Dan Scanlan, Times-Union staff writer
A 27-year-old Southside man was arrested June 22 on charges of battery, false imprisonment, battery against a police officer and resisting an officer with violence after police said the man attacked his girlfriend repeatedly in her home in the 1700 block of Leon Road, and attacked officers who arrested him Sunday.
The incident was one of three on the Southside in the past week that ended up with police being attacked while trying to arrest someone.
The incident began around 3 a.m. June 20, when, police said, the man came home and began attacking the 24-year-old woman while she was asleep in bed, punching her head. The woman tried to leave, but the man locked the door and refused to let her go for the next four hours as he "battered and terrorized the victim," according to the police report.
Police said the man would squeeze the woman's throat or cover her face with a blanket so she couldn't breathe, as well as grab her hair and slam her head into the wall. The man ripped the woman's clothing and threatened to cut her face with a piece of broken glass, and threw bottles and other objects at her, police said. The woman was able to go to work later that morning, but the police report said the man showed up at her home around 8:45 p.m. and shoved her to the ground as he threatened her.
A judge granted an arrest warrant to police June 21 and police said they found the man sleeping on his couch. Three officers went inside, flanking the man as one told him he was under arrest before his arms were grabbed. The police report indicates the man pulled one arm out of an officer's grasp and punched him in the face before he was dragged onto the floor and handcuffed. The officer was treated for a cut nose, while the man was taken to Shands Jacksonville for treatment of a swollen eye before he was booked into jail.
James Silas Shiver of the 5500 block of Wilman Way was held in the Duval County jail on $75,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned July 16, police said. …
