Thames Torso Suspect Is Asylum Seeker

THE WOMAN arrested in Glasgow in connection with the torso of a boy found in the Thames was an asylum seeker who made frequent trips to London, it emerged today.

Scotland Yard detectives who today continued to interview the West African woman, in her thirties, following a lengthy surveillance operation, want to compare her DNA with that of the child whose mutilated remains were found near Tower Bridge last September.

It is understood she was one of a number of African refugees sent to Glasgow in the last six months under a Home Office dispersal programme for asylum seekers.

Neighbours today described the woman as "frighteningly eccentric", heavily built with long fingernails and wild, dyed hair.

A hairdresser who works close to the council estate in Pollokshaws, where the woman was arrested by Met detectives yesterday morning, said that she had travelled to London on a number of occasions. The hairdresser said: "She asked for a job. …
