Teams from the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club and the Orange Park Country Club advanced to the Buick Scramble National Finals Oct. 2-6 at Walt Disney World after winning gross and net divisions in a sectional tournament last Thursday in Orange Park.

The Ponte Vedra team of pro Bruce Mohler and amateurs Bright Skinner, Wiley Bryant, Pete Loftis and Richard Rosberg shot 14-under-par 58, then had to beat a team from the Plantation Oaks Golf Club from Alachua in a sudden-death chip-off. The Plantation Oaks team was led by Hyde Park pro Gary Murfitt.

The Orange Park team of pro Kenny Enclade and amateurs James Anderson, Jody Kinsey, Derek Minch and John Zorabedian won the net division by one shot over Jacksonville Beach, shooting 18-under 54 after carding a gross 58 and getting four shots. The Jacksonville Beach team was pro Bud Dolores, Steve Lyons, Don Dodds, Marty Lewis and Randy Bell.

The OPCC team won on Anderson's 17th birthday, and he celebrated by hitting drives or second shots that led to 10-foot eagle putts at the par-5 third and sixth holes.

"James was the horse all day," Enclade said.

The area teams will be among 260 teams to compete at Disney World (130 in each division) for more than $265,000 in cash for professionals and merchandise and gift certificates for the amateurs. Counting local and sectional qualifiers, more than 100,000 players compete in the Buick Scramble, making it the world's largest amateur golf tournament.

Other teams competing in the sectional at Orange Park were from San Jose, Marsh Creek, Sawgrass, North Hampton, South Hampton, Eagle Harbor, Deerwood, Oak Bridge and St. Johns County.
