The American Red Cross and the Atlantic Beach-based Carey Bishop Foundation are using a 6-foot St. Bernard to help raise awareness throughout the Jacksonville area about water safety for children.

The dog's name is Ready Red Cross. He's being used as an attention-getter to help teach children as well as their parents and guardians about the dangers of swimming pools and other water attractions. The dog, with a human companion, travels through the community to teach people how to be ready for all types of emergencies and disasters.

The American Red Cross says drowning is one of the leading causes of death for young children.

The dog and human team visit schools, day-care centers and other groups to teach children how to be safe.

Ready Red Cross has a fan club that any child can join for free. Once a member, children receive regular newsletters from Ready with safety tips and fun games, a special birthday card from Ready himself and an invitation to his birthday bash. …
