IT IS news that will excite red-blooded males everywhere: if you want to go out with Gwyneth Paltrow, all you have to do is ask.

Miss Paltrow, 29, who recently starred in Proof at London's Donmar Warehouse, has been lamenting the fact that only two British men had the backbone to ask her out to dinner.

"I did get asked out a couple of times on my last trip to London," she said, "and I went out on both. They were very charming. I only go for the toffs."

One of the gents was actor James Purefoy, who starred in A Knight's Tale.

The other's identity is not known. But Miss Paltrow lashed out at the dating scene in the UK, saying: "British people don't seem to ask each other out on dates.

"If someone asks you out they're really going out on a limb, whereas in America it happens all the time. Someone will come up to you and ask you for dinner and you'll say 'sure'. It's no big deal and no weight should be attached to it. It's only dinner for God's sake.

"Yet in Britain mostly what happens seems to be that people meet at work. If there's a little something there then they hang out together and all of a sudden, they're boyfriend and girlfriend."

Miss Paltrow's comments are the latest slight for the beleaguered British male.

Last month a not unattractive Canadian arts correspondent named Leah McLaren wrote a scathing series of articles revealing that although she had been out to dinner with 12 London bachelors, not one of them was adept at seduction.

She sniffed: "While the English man beats nervously around the bush, the American suitor goes for the female jugular."

Miss Paltrow adds insult to Ms McLaren's injury in an interview with Now magazine, which is published tomorrow.

While British men may have lost out on wining and dining Miss Paltrow, the actress is not missing any opportunities to broaden her repertoire.

One of her next challenges will be an explicit lesbian sex scene in a film called The Passion. …
