CITROEN'S Synergie-replacing C8 people carrier is bigger than before and comes loaded with novelties but is the latest king-size multipurpose vehicle sufficiently different to be a success in the showrooms?

The answer is yes, which might come as a surprise given that the C8 shares most of its bodywork and running gear with the 807 and Ulysee models that are made by Peugeot and Fiat and roll from the same production line.

Though it appears similar to its stablemates, a host of detail differences mean that 65 per cent of the C8's outer shell is unique, claims CitroIn. As a result, the C8 is easily recognised as a CitroIn, which is more than could be said for its box-on-wheels predecessor.

Due on sale at the end of the year, the C8 provides more effective competition for the Galaxy and Sharan, which are also jointly manufactured by Ford and Volkswagen.

That means head-on prices starting from around pound sterling18,000, representing strong value for the growing number of motorists seeking a car able to cope with business travel and large families. …
