Henman's Hopes Are Rising for US Open

TIM HENMAN received a double boost as he prepares for the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday.

The British No 1 has been named as the fifth seed for Flushing Meadows and is on course to recover from a shoulder injury he suffered in Indianapolis last week.

But the news was not so good for Greg Rusedski today as he pulled out of the TD Waterhouse Cup at Long Island. Britain's No2 has blisters on his feet and decided not to take any chances before the US Open for which he is unseeded.

Henman revealed signs for optimism after his first practice session since the injury.

He said: "I felt no pain at all. It was only a gentle hit but if it reacts well overnight then I'm confident I can gradually build up the amount I play and be ready for the US Open.

"I've been having treatment three times a day and that's helped speed up my recovery. …
