There's No 'I' in Jaguars Coach Has Veterans Talk of Team Concept

Coach Tom Coughlin has reached deep into his bag of motivational tricks during the Jaguars training camp in an effort to bring his young team together.

During the offseason, Coughlin asked three veterans -- tight end Kyle Brady, quarterback Mark Brunell and safety Donovin Darius -- to prepare talks to give to the players at night meetings during camp about the importance of team.

"It was mostly just something to do with team," Brady said. "Something to do with the concept of team, how to build team, how to trust your team. We had to submit our topics to him for approval. It was pretty well thought out and planned.

"Donovin spoke about accountability with your teammates. I spoke about esprit de corps and talked about that in relation to our team and Mark spoke the other night about team and how we need to have values and vision as a team."

Brady, who didn't play Friday night because of a pinched nerve in his neck but hopes to return this week against the Chicago Bears, said planning his address was a like performing a summer school assignment.

"Instead of being on summer vacation, I'm sitting there thinking about this report I've got to do like your summer assignment," Brady said.

Asked if he got a good grade, Brady said, "I got a verbal commendation. I guess it was a plus or a minus. I think I got a verbal plus. I felt really good about that."

Coughlin said he's had former players address the team in the past, but it was the first time he's called on current players, although Marco Coleman took it upon himself to address the players during practice last week.

"It went very well," Coughlin said of the talks by Brady, Brunell and Darius.

"They did a very good job," Coughlin added. "They prepared themselves properly and the team was focused on what they were saying. They were listening to one of their own."

Coughlin said he decided to call on the three veterans they have been through good times and bad. …
