New Faces, but Familiar Goals Expectations Are High for New Jackson Coach

After winning 21 games during the past two seasons, Jackson football could hardly be described as a rebuilding program. Since last November, when the Tigers' season ended in the second round of the state playoffs, the heart of that success has moved elsewhere.

Gone are state Class 4A Player of the Year Leon Washington, who graduated and signed with Florida State; coach Kevin Sullivan, who resigned in the spring; and two top underclassmen: lineman Aubrey McPhadden and quarterback Chris Walker. McPhadden and Walker transferred to District 3-4A rivals First Coast and Ribault, respectively, for their senior seasons.

That left new coach Gil Carroll with high expectations and the challenge of meeting them with the remaining Tigers.

"I like these kids here," Carroll said. "We established a pretty good working relationship with them in spring practice, and I'm excited about coaching them."

Carroll, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience in North Carolina, said he will put his best 11 players on the defensive side of the ball. …
