The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has a message for those who are planning on taking one last trip before the end of the summer: Buckle Up.

Florida law enforcement authorities said 22 people were killed in traffic crashes over the Labor Day weekend last year. St. Johns County Sheriff Neil Perry said he wants St. Johns County residents as well as visitors to protect themselves during this busy time on Florida's highways by fastening their seat belts.

"We have to remember to buckle up year-round, but it becomes especially important when the roads are crowded," said Perry. "Labor Day weekend is a high-traffic period, and there are a lot of distractions on the road. We know that people who are buckled up in crashes have a better chance of not being injured or killed. It just makes good sense to wear a safety belt."

Perry said if protecting yourself from a crash is not enough incentive to buckle up, the fact that it's the law should be.
