Terry Tipped to Eclipse Adams; Hasselbaink Hails Returning Star

CHELSEA'S Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink today claims team-mate John Terry is one of the best defenders England have ever had.

The Holland international believes the 21-year-old centre- back is already better than Tony Adams at his peak and ahead of some of his rivals in the current England squad.

Terry has always looked up to retired Arsenal legend Adams and, when Chelsea were not in action, used to go to Highbury to study the way he played.

The Essex-born pair share a number of similarities in their football style and have spoken of their respect for each other.

But Hasselbaink's claim about Terry will be an important vote of confidence ahead of his return to the Chelsea squad for tonight's game at Blackburn.

Terry has been selected for the first time this season after his highly-publicised court case - in which he was cleared of all charges - and a knee injury.

Hasselbaink said: "Terry's compared to Adams, but I think he's got more quality than Adams because he is better on the ball.

"I think he is going to be a player involved in the England squad very soon.

"He is good enough to be involved with it now, because he is already better than other defenders in there. He is playing with experienced defenders at Chelsea which has certainly helped him and made his game even better."

The prospect of Terry playing for England largely depends on his fitness.

He had a knee operation in the summer and, had it not been for the court case, would have expected to return earlier.

Looking ahead to tonight's game, Terry told Chelsea TV: "Blackburn are a great team and have some great players.

"I saw them play against Liverpool the other night and they tore them apart.

" Manager Graeme Souness has obviously been there and done it and knows what the lads want from training. …
