Graham Starts Fast in Classic

Article excerpt

Byline: Leonard Ruble Jr., Times-Union correspondent

As the new bowling season gets under way around the area, Jim Graham is already in midseason form.

He averaged a little better than 233 en route to a 700 series in the first week of the Jax Classic League at Jax Lanes Grove Park.

The 18-year veteran increased his average the next week, rolling an 802 series (249, 259 and 296). "Seven pins and nine pins, that's all I left all night," Graham said.

During the second game of the night, the left-hander left another pair of solid nine pins. In the final game, Graham started with eleven strikes. According to Graham, he rolled the ball way too slow on the final shot. The result was a 1-2-4-8 combination for the 296 game.

"I choked on the last shot," he said. "Even when you have as many 300 games [20] as I do, you still get nervous and roll a bad a shot."

Graham has a catalog of honor scores, including 12 800 series, 20 perfect games, three 299 games and three 298 games. He was inducted into the GJBA Hall of Fame during the 1998-99 bowling season. The left-hander plans to test his skill in various PBA regional tournaments this season.

Graham is bowling in three leagues, in which he has a 243 composite average.

EXTRA FRAMES -- The GJBA, JWBA and JAYABA Association yearbook of averages has been printed. Copies are available at area bowling centers. The three associations have merged efforts, publishing one yearbook that contains the names of their respective directors, Hall of Fame inductees, and other pertinent information plus bowlers' averages from 2001-2002. If a person's average is not in the yearbook, they should inquire if their league secretary turned in league averages as required by ABC/WIBC League rules.
