A THIEF who broke into Harvey Nichols lay hidden in a false ceiling for more than 12 hours with [pound]100,000 worth of jewels.

The man was discovered only when staff noticed a movement in the ceiling and called police who found him covered in dust.

The man, in his thirties, was hauled out still carrying the jewels which he had stolen hours before from an in-store boutique.

He is believed to have broken into the Knightsbridge store early on Wednesday and hidden inside the ceiling cavity after setting off an alarm. He remained in his hiding place as security guards made a fruitless search of the ground floor.

After the guards reset the alarms the thief lowered himself from the ceiling and headed for the cabinets of David Morris, which supplies gems to celebrities such as the Beckhams.

The man took more than [pound]100,000 worth of watches and necklaces and returned to his hiding place to wait and make his escape. …
