A 22-year-old Glen St. Mary man was arrested Wednesday night on charges of attempted kidnapping after Jacksonville police said he tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl Saturday from a Westside Wal-Mart.

Thomas Jay Cole was booked into the Duval County jail on $250,000 bail.

Police said the girl and her mother were shopping at the store on 103rd Street near Interstate 295 when the girl went to explore parts of the store alone. According to the police report, the girl noticed the man following her before he walked up to her in the toy aisle and handed her a note that read, "There's a gun in my pants. If you want to live, keep quite[sic] and walk out with me now."

Police said the girl dropped the note and ran to her mother. The man, once he saw the girl was getting help, disappeared into the crowd.

Parmer said information supplied by the girl coupled with evidence recovered at the scene, including fingerprints on the note, led to the arrest.
