Times-Union Welcomes New Director to Photojournalism Staff

Dede J. Smith has been named photo director of the Times-Union.

Smith comes to Jacksonville from the Gainesville Sun, where she worked for a decade, rising from a staff photographer position to photo editor.

"Dede brings to our newspaper a wealth of experience," said Editor Patrick Yack. "She is energetic and enthusiastic and will help bring us an even more compelling photo report."

Smith, 39, is a journalism graduate of the University of Florida, where she later taught and mentored photojournalism students.

She also worked as a photographer at newspapers in Ocala, Fort Myers and Port Charlotte.

Living in Gainesville on and off since the age of 6, Smith admitted to having "a passion for Gator football on a Saturday afternoon."

"I've been to a bowl game every year since 1996," she said of her work assignments.

Smith finds college football to be "an unscripted pageant where anyone can win. …
