New Tigers DE White Making Up for Lost Time

After watching Edward Waters College games from behind a video camera lens last year, Raines High grad Jeris White has joined the action this season as a starting defensive end for the Tigers.

EWC's homecoming game today against Webber International (1-0) will be significant meaning for White. It will be only the second game the 25-year-old has played at Raines' Kitchings Stadium since his senior season in 1994.

In his first home game for the Tigers, White made 21/2 tackles in an 18-7 victory Aug. 31 against Saint Augustine's.

"I was so excited. I just went out there and played my heart out," White said.

While facing double teams, White has made 101/2 tackles, eight for losses, in three games. Last week, he was named the Willie E. Gary Classic's defensive player of the game after forcing two fumbles that led to touchdowns in EWC's 31-10 victory against Shaw.

"He steps up and makes big plays for us," Tigers coach Lamonte Massie said. "He's probably the quickest guy off the line of scrimmage."

After graduating from Raines in '95, White spent most of his time working for a local concrete company. He decided to enroll at Edward Waters (2-1) when its football program was reinstated last year after a 34-year hiatus. White volunteered to be the team videographer last season while he worked on his academic eligibility.

Now the 6-foot-4, 243-pound White is one of the Tigers' defensive leaders. Massie and some teammates compare him to Jevon Kearse, a fourth-year defensive end for the Tennessee Titans and former All-American linebacker at the University of Florida.

"I've met Jevon Kearse, and Jeris is just like him," said EWC receiver Darnelius Jones. "Jevon actually has a little height on him, and he's a little bigger. But he's got the intangibles just like Jevon. …
