IDS Tour of Britain to Show the People 'New Tories' Care

IAIN DUNCAN SMITH today hit the national trail in an effort to build on the success of last week's party conference.

The Tory leader embarked on a three-week tour designed to bolster his claim last week that "the Conservatives are back".

But he was also out to build on the image of a new and more caring party, opening his tour with visits to a school and an anticrime project in Manchester.

As MPs return to the Commons tomorrow after the summer recess, Mr Duncan Smith will be in Birmingham and is expected to be away from Westminster for most of the month. His task was eased by a renewed pledge at the weekend from former rival Michael Portillo, renouncing any future leadership challenge.

Mr Portillo, telling the Tory Party to "forget me", was the second top Conservative in a month to bar himself from any leadership claim, following shadow home secretary Oliver Letwin.

Mr Duncan Smith's team were hopeful that last week ' s Bournemouth conference would be the launchpad for improving their fortunes with the voters. …
