Spectacular Shows Take to the Sea and the Sky

Article excerpt

All eyes will be on the skies this weekend as vintage and modern aircraft perform aerial acrobatics above the Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

It all starts today at this year's Sea and Sky Spectacular, which returns to NAS and The Jacksonville Landing (where high-tech ships will float dockside) after a year at the Beaches. Organizers have decided to rotate the site from there to NAS from year to year.

Organizers also have added some security measures in light of the 9/11 attacks. Visitors can expect some delays at the gates while guards search vehicles. They also will need to pass through metal detectors.

This year's timing coincides with other big events on the First Coast -- the Georgia-Florida football game at Alltel Stadium and the First Coast Ham Jam at the World Golf Village. Sea and Sky officials decided to skip the sea portion for tomorrow because of the football game.

Among the weekend's highlights will be the Super Shockwave Jet Truck, which will race down the runway at speeds upwards of 300 mph, displays of the Red Devils of the British Army and a potent amphibious assault ship, and harrowing search and rescue demonstrations.

And, of course, a U.S. Navy air show wouldn't be complete without the Blue Angels taking to the sky for each day's grand finale.

Admission is free. See, keywords "air show," for more information.
