Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin convened a meeting of his veteran players Monday to search for ways to end the team's three-game losing streak as they prepare for Sunday night's game against the New York Giants.

"We talked about what we think has to happen and the kind of effort and enthusiasm that has to go with it, the inspiration, the passion," Coughlin said.

Coughlin is looking for the veterans to provide leadership to the young players.

"There's no way the veteran guys, despite some of their problems, can go off by themselves and not be in position where they have to do more to show the way," he said.

Since the team is so young, the defensive veterans at the meeting included second year defensive tackle Marcus Stroud and third-year linebacker Danny Clark.

Coughlin also asked the veterans for some input and running back Fred Taylor said he had a simple message: "Let's just go and win. Let's just play ball and win."


Wide receivers Bobby Shaw (toe), who didn't practice yesterday, and Patrick Johnson, who was inactive last week with an abdomen injury, both took about half the snaps yesterday.

Coughlin said the inability of the two receivers to practice much last week may have hurt the passing game.

"It hasn't helped our cohesiveness by any stretch of the imagination. We're hoping we're going to get that solved to a certain extent today," he said.


So how is Coughlin, noted for being emotional during the games, handling the three-game losing streak?

"Not well. That's a personal thing. It's not ever going to change," he said.

Coughlin said he hasn't been sleeping much, but said, "That's never been a problem. The energy level is pretty good. There's no lack of energy. …
