Georgia voters selected state legislators yesterday in races that threw dozens of lawmakers into new districts.

These were the races being contested in Southeast Georgia:

-- House District 128 -- Democrat Al Williams of Midway faced Republican Vincent T. Willliams of Brunswick. No early returns were available.

Both candidates cited economic development and the protection of water resources among their top goals.

The seat was vacated with the retirement of Rep. E.C. Tillman, D-Brunswick.

-- House District 129, Post 1 -- Republican Will Hurst of Blackshear was leading 10-year veteran Rep. Hinson Mosley, D-Jesup, in early returns.

Rep. Tommy Smith, D-Nicholls, was unopposed for the seat in District 129, Post 2.

The newly redrawn district basically lumped together Mosley and Smith's former districts with a few changes. The district now includes all of Pierce, Bacon, Brantley and Wayne counties and portions of Glynn, Long, Liberty and Charlton counties.

-- House District 147 -- Republican Cecily Hill of St. Marys has won over former Kingsland Mayor Keith Dixon, a Democrat, for the seat vacated by Rep. Charlie Smith, D-St. Marys. Smith rose in 10 years in office to the powerful position of Gov. Roy Barnes' floor leader.

Hill and Dixon both emphasized bringing new industry to Camden County, with the announced closure of Durango-Georgia Paper Co., one of the county's largest employers since World War II.

-- Senate District 3 -- Republican N. Shaw McVeigh of Brunswick was leading 10-year veteran Sen. Rene D. Kemp, D-Hinesville, in early returns.

McVeigh acknowledged his disadvantage of not being as well known in the northern area of the newly redrawn district, which includes all of Liberty, Long and McIntosh counties and portions of Appling, Bryan, Glynn and Wayne counties. …
