Adriana Itzcovitz and her husband, Juan Martin, did their homework before escaping the devastating economic situation in Argentina after their native country's banking system collapsed in December.

With Adriana serving primarily as a translator for her husband, the couple waded through Internet Web sites, magazines and newspapers, looking for just the right place to start over.

The result: A new Dollar Code store next to Publix in the Fleming Island Shopping Center just off Country Road 220.

"It was very interesting what was going on in Jacksonville," Adriana said. "The demographics are good -- it's growing fast. In Argentina, the only thing growing is unemployment."

She said her husband sold six of his seven Codigo 2 stores to his business partner in Buenos Aires.

Translated, Codigo 2 means "code two," and all items are sold for two pesos.

The couple decided to call their new store Dollar Code, where most -- if not all -- items are sold for $1.

"It's going to work," Adriana said. "If you like to buy things for your kids or for presents, they will find good quality for a dollar."

She said her husband is using the same merchandising techniques he used to put together a string of 10 stores in Argentina, after starting from nothing just seven years ago.

"You have to get new things all the time," Adriana said. "You need to have a nice and neat store, and you have to study the market to see what people want and like."

EVENING OF GIVING

Shoppers are invited to combine the season's festivities with a chance to do a good deed for the community by joining Orange Park Mall in an Evening of Giving on Nov. 24.
