Another race, another championship.

Clay High School's Allison Barlow won the individual title at the regional 1-3A cross-country meet in Lake City Saturday with a time of 19:18.

Barlow, the No. 3-ranked runner in Class 3A, has won both the district and regional championships in consecutive weeks. She said she rallied from a big deficit early on.

"The first mile was scary because Allie Hunter [of Tallahassee Lincoln, who finished third] went out really hard," Barlow said. "She probably had a good 60-yard lead on us at one point, but we reeled her back in before it was over. It is great to win both district and regional. I am hoping for at least a top five finish in state."

Barlow's teammate, Ashley Hopkins (19:21), the No. 2 ranked runner in Class 3A, finished right behind her for the second consecutive week. Both runners and their Blue Devil teammates will represent their school Saturday in the Class 3A state meet at Ed Radice Park in Tampa.

The top six teams and top 15 individuals from the regional meet qualify for the state meet.

Clay won the regional team championship with 85 points, Fort Walton Beach High was second with 90. Other Clay County teams that did not qualify were Ridgeview High (seventh place with 136 points) and Middleburg High (10th with 231 points). Ridgeview's Susie Crosbie (20:27) qualified individually with an eighth-place finish.

Clay High coach Joe Ingallinera said his team has an opportunity to do well at state.

"They are doing great," he said. "There are four regional champions that could win state and we have as equal a chance as the other three teams. Our No. 3 girl, Jamie Purvis (22nd at 21:14) recovered from an injury and just ran a spectacular race on Saturday in regionals. We have a good chance to finish in the top four as a team and Allison and Ashley could finish in the top three. …
