Red Lobsters Donate $5,000 for Scholarships

-- The Tom Joyner Foundation has received $5,000 from area Red Lobster restaurants to be used to award two $2,500 scholarships for African-American students.

The $5,000 contribution is the 29th installment of an anticipated $150,000 donation by Red Lobster to the Tom Joyner Foundation for 60 scholarships for students enrolled in historically black colleges and universities across the nation.

The scholarships will help deserving students continue their education, said Tom Joyner Jr., president and chief executive of the Tom Joyner Foundation.

-- Corey Anthony Harrison has received a $3,000 scholarship from the Florida Rock Industries Scholarship Program. The program provides $1,500 from Florida Rock and $1,500 from the host institution to a minority student of academic merit who is majoring in business and/or engineering. Harrison is an accounting and business student at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

Harrison is the son of Marian Benton of the Northside.

-- Ashley Haliko of Mandarin participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law in Washington recently.

The curriculum allows participants to learn from the examples set by attorneys and court officials from municipal court to the U.S. Supreme Court. The process encourages participants to develop perspective and resolve. Throughout the forum, the students examine how court cases often change the legal system.

Students are selected for the programs from across the United States after demonstrating academic achievement, an interest in law and justice and leadership potential.

-- Jacksonville-based HOPE worldwide has received a Global Volunteer Action Fund award from the American Express Foundation. Awards are presented on a competitive basis, semi-annually, to eligible non-profit organizations at which American Express employees and teams of employees volunteer their time in the community. …
