Florida State's second-class status in ACC basketball isn't a dirty little secret, but that doesn't mean the league office is going to sit by as the Seminoles get shortchanged by the national media, particularly from its network partner ESPN.

In its promotion for this week's ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, ESPN did not promote Monday night's FSU-Iowa matchup as part of the package, though the game was carried on ESPN2. In fact, the network promoted the Challenge as beginning Tuesday night. Furthermore, on Tuesday gave little recognition to the Seminoles for their 80-67 win against the Hawkeyes.

"I didn't really care for that too much," said ACC assistant commissioner for media relations Brian Morrison, who forwarded an e-mail to ESPN's Brad Edwards expressing his displeasure.


Second-year Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe confirmed Monday that he had been contacted by Baylor officials about its coaching vacancy and was willing to entertain offers from the Big 12 Conference school, which is looking to replace Kevin Steele.

"As a football coach you always listen to people," Grobe said. "That doesn't mean you act on anything. You want the opportunity to improve yourself, if possible, because this is a very volatile business."

Grobe said no interview or visit to the Waco, Texas campus had been scheduled. Wake Forest athletics director Ron Wellman said he would sit down with Grobe to discuss his situation if Baylor presented an offer. Wellman is expected to make a counter-offer to keep the man who has led the Demon Deacons to consecutive six-win seasons; a feat duplicated twice in the last 50 years.


Georgia Tech senior TB Gordon Clinkscale became the third Yellow Jacket back to suffer a season-ending injury when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday's 51-7 drubbing at Georgia. …
