Free Tax Program for Senior Citizens Canceled for 2003

About 500 seniors who received free tax help at several Beaches sites in years past will be on their own or will have to drive farther for that assistance next year.

The Tax-Aide Program, sponsored by the AARP, couldn't find a volunteer for the district coordinator position, which oversees 14 work sites in eastern Duval and Nassau counties.

Without that, the program can't function and will be suspended for the 2003 tax season, said Tom Singer, AARP's state coordinator for the Tax-Aide Program.

"It's the lack of a willing leader," Singer said. "It's just tragic."

Last year, the program helped 502 seniors at several Beaches sites with their taxes. Those sites include a senior citizens housing tower in Jacksonville Beach called Pablo Towers, Cypress Village on San Pablo Road, the Senior Center in Jacksonville Beach and the Beaches branch library in Neptune Beach.

About 2,300 taxpayers received help across the two-county district, Singer said. …
