Pets, Owners Strut Their Stuff at Annual Parade

It was a brisk morning, but the droopy pooches and merry mutts came out in festive style recently for the seventh annual Jacksonville Humane Society Holiday Pet Parade.

The pooches took over Memorial Park with two separate parades: the Droopy Pooch Parade and the new Merry Mutt Strut.

Some winners of this year's contests were Lesley Dennett and her dog Maggie (dressed as Sherlock Holmes) for best costume, Kenneth Sanders and his dog Flash for best pet trick, Monica Parker and her basset Sophie for biggest basset and Melissa Staggers and her pet Hank for owner/pet look-a-like.

Local rescue groups at the event included Suncoast Basset Rescue and Pet Rescue North, as well as a number of vendors such as Benson Galleries in St. Augustine, Critter Sitters, Vacation-Genie, Riverside Starbucks and Stix and Bonz Pet Bakery at Jacksonville Beach. Ashley King from WAPE (95.1 FM) announced the start of each parade.

All proceeds of the parade have gone to help care for the more than 16,000 unwanted and homeless animals the society receives each year. …
