Runners to Boost Sports; Funds from Race to Go to Schools

Organizers of a 5K race hope to have 300 sprinters hit the streets of Chimney Lakes Jan. 18 to benefit children's sports programs in the area.

For years, the race, sponsored by Westside Baptist Church, was held near the Herlong Road facility. Last year, it was moved into the neighborhood where a number of members live. It will begin and finish at the Chimney Lakes Recreation Center, 8410 Cheswick Oak Ave.

"We wanted to go into the community," said David Morris, the race's director and a Chimney Lakes resident. "Participation has picked up since we moved out here. There are a lot of joggers in the area."

Although some top runners will participate, the race is geared toward those who do it for exercise, he said.

In the past, it has attracted from 150 to 175 competitors. The goal this year is 300. The event also includes a 1-mile fun run.

If a greater number participates, Morris hopes to raise enough money to help out the tennis, swimming and tot soccer programs.

"With only 150 finishers, you usually don't make much on road races," said Morris, who teaches U.S. history at Forrest High School. "You spend your money for T-shirts and put any that's left over into next year's race. …
