Scores of volunteers have been working steadily since Sunday to set up thousands of books in 39 different categories that will be sold, beginning today, at The Friends of the Library's annual book sale at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

The sale, normally held in March, was scheduled earlier this year to accommodate construction at the church, at 545 Florida A1A N. in Ponte Vedra Beach.

"It's a social event that people look forward to," said Guy DiCarlo, book sale chairman for the Friends of the Library, Ponte Vedra Beach. "Our members look forward to it, the community looks forward to it. And I can't say enough about our volunteers. We have exceptional volunteers."

Twenty volunteers were out Sunday afternoon to begin setting up for the sale -- beginning with 800 boxes of books piled from floor to ceiling in a nearby storage garage.

A few Friends of the Library members and students from Landrum Middle School's Gentlemen's Quarterly Club loaded the boxed books onto a rental truck and took them to the church.

"These kids are doing well," said DiCarlo, as he watched the teens tackle the stacked boxes in assembly line fashion. "Without them, we couldn't do this. We'd have to hire six men."

People from the community donate books to the library throughout the year. As they come in, DiCarlo brings them to the storage area to count and sort into categories. His system is simple: When a box from a category is filled, it is added to the pile and replaced with a new box.

DiCarlo, who fills the boxes weekly as books come in, keeps an ongoing inventory of paperbacks and hardbacks, so he knows how many tables to set up for each category at the annual sale.

"Name anything you want, and that's a category," DiCarlo said. "Literature, photography, history, sciences, biography, politics, business, military, animals, mysteries, westerns and romance. We sell a lot of romance."

Last year's sale brought in $24,000. …
