Amateurs Claim Chapter Cup Again

The Northern Chapter Cup Matches have turned decidedly amateurish.

For the third time in four years and the fourth time in six years, the amateur team won the annual match-play event against the Northern Chapter PGA professional team. But yesterday's 16 1/2-7 1/2 victory at the Timuquana Country Club was historic in several other respects:

--The final margin matched the most lopsided score in the 12-year history of the event, previously recorded by the professionals in 1992, the first year the Cup Matches were staged.

--The amateurs' 9 1/2-2 1/2 blitz in singles was the most points either team had scored in that format, breaking the record of 9-3 held by the pros in '94.

--Those points included the first time professional stalwart Walter Smith had ever lost in singles. David Anthony made par putts of 9 feet at No. 17 and 12 feet at No. 18 to beat Smith 1-up, ending Smith's streak of nine consecutive singles victories. Smith had also never lost a singles or doubles match on the 18th hole.

--No team had ever won the first six singles matches completed. The sixth victory, which clinched the match for the amateurs, was tinged with irony: a 2-up decision for Don Padgett over Richie Bryant. Padgett's father was the president of the PGA of America, the governing body for club professionals in the U.S., in 1977-78.

The amateurs cut the professionals' lead in the series to 7-4-1, after losing five and tying once in the first six years.

"We were pretty confident with how we were playing, but I think winning the first six matches would have been too much for anyone to ask," said amateur captain Jimmy Kelly, who won the Cup in his second attempt as captain. "Before the singles matches, every one of those guys looked me in the eye and told me they were going to get it for us. …
