All of Jacksonville's TV stations will be making daily jaunts between Jacksonville and Daytona next week, as NASCAR's Winston Cup Series season opener gets under way on Feb. 16 with the 45th running of the Daytona 500 (Fox TV at noon).

But before NASCAR's signature race, there's the "non-points" Budweiser Shootout at Daytona tomorrow night. The event sets the tone for the remainder of Daytona International Speedway's SpeedWeeks. Instead of the normal Sunday afternoon time slot, the race has been moved to prime time (8 p.m.) and will be broadcast on Fox (WAWS TV-30 locally).

TV-30 sports director Ryan Elijah will file a report from Daytona immediately after the race. It's the start of a hectic nine days for Elijah and his staff of Jordan Siegel, Will Segui and Kim Coyle.

TV-30 will present a 30-minute Daytona 500 Preview Special , just prior to the race. Elijah will host the special from Daytona, with Siegel in the home studios and staffers Josh Talkington with Ryan in Victory Lane, and Lindsay Czarniak filing reports from the infield with a fan's perspective.

WJXT TV-4 will do daily reports from the speedway, and will present its own special at 8:30 p.m. Monday. The special will include highlights from the Bud Shootout and Sunday's qualifying race, and a preview of Sunday's race. Sports director Sam Kouvaris will host the show from Daytona and will be joined by Larry Ramirez, with Sean Woodland in the studio and Corey Saban covering fans' reactions.

Dan Hicken, sports director at WTLV TV-12/WJXX TV-25, and assistant Jeff Prosser will alternate with daily coverage from Daytona, but will not have a race special.

"We'll be there each day so we can 'feel the thunder' and bring that to the fans back here," Hicken said. …
