The Miracle Makeovers; Sex and the City Star Kim Cattrall May Look Unrecognisably Frumpy in Her Cropped Dark Wig, but a Funky, Tousled Short Style Can Actually Take Years off You

SOMETIMES hanging on to long hair in the hope of hanging on to youth is futile. Unless you are Goldie Hawn, or an ageing rock chick with an attitude to maintain, a longer hairstyle tends to drag the contours of the face downwards, emphasising your age.

Here's how But short doesn't have to mean severe. Top hairdressers argue that a funky, tousled, modern crop can take five years off you in an afternoon.

Apparently all it takes is a serious haircut, something with shape and complexity.

We asked some of London's top hairdressers to take time out from refining plans for Comic Relief 's Red Nose Day (this year's theme is The Big Haircut, so they're all involved) to show how it's done.

"There's a whole section of the population that is younger in spirit than their years," says Nicky Clarke, "and their hair has to reflect that.

"After 40, allowing your hair to do nothing isn't really an option.

You don't have to cut it drastically short, but you need a cut that can add body and texture, to make the most of your face."

Sara Stewart, 40, works in publicity and lives in west London. She went to Beverly Cobella at Cobella Akqa.

When Sara was younger, she wore her ebullient mass of curly hair long - but had become stuck for a style now. "I've never found a shorter style that worked well," she says. That didn't deter Beverly Cobella, who is in her second year as Hairdresser of the Year.

"Sara's hair was just a mass of curls, with a very round shape to it," says Beverly. "I couldn't make it too short at the back, but I've given it a very definite cut which will work both when it's in its naturally curly state, and when she has the time to straighten it. It's shorter around her ears, too, to show her cheekbones.

Sara's verdict: "It's fantastic. I didn't know hairdressing could be like this.

The salon has a lovely pampering feel to it, and Beverly has cut my hair to suit the curl and taken the weight out of it, without making it so short that it goes frizzy.

It's really contemporary. Although I look utterly different with it straight, I'm really happy with it."
