It is almost no exaggeration to say that America has not had a friend in France since Marquis de LaFayette.

That was in the 18th century. In the 19th century, blight wiped out the French vineyards and the United States sent aid. In the 20th century, the Germans nearly wiped out the French, twice, and the United States sent aid both times.

Now, all the U.S. wants is a vote of support from France.

It doesn't ask them to fight. France has not been a major power since Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to St. Helena.

Britain, a true power, remains a staunch U.S. ally. But it is not the only one; 18 European nations are on board the effort to liberate Iraq.

Yet the nations that get the TV airtime are France, Germany and Russia, all of which harbor deep anti-American sentiment and have other reasons, financial among them, for opposing the U.S.-led effort.

Of the three, only Germany is a major economic power. But it may not remain one. …
