This spring Sir Terence Conran launches Content, a furniture brand that will bring cutting-edge design back to the masses, says Barbara Chandler

SIR Terence Conran is very excited. He says he is experiencing the same boost of adrenaline that hit him nearly 40 years ago, when he opened the first Habitat - now in the hands of design director Tom Dixon - in King's Road, Chelsea, in 1964. Radiant with pride, he shows me what all the fuss is about. There's a chic swivel/rocking chair whose curvy white resin shell is lined inside with tightfitting black leather upholstery (with neatly-seamed fuschia wool as an alternative). There's a wonderfully wide boxy arm chair, neatly piped, and big enough for two.

More curves distinguish the red Love sofa, with its satellite Chaperon seat, designed for nestling up close.

Displaying the joys of solid hardwoods, the Comb dark walnut nest of tables has m e t i c u l o u s l y detailed edge joints, and the Balance shelving unit in solid oak is attractively asymmetrical.

These are just a few of the 70 pieces that make up a new range of furniture called Content, which is the result of a remarkable partnership. The furniture is designed by Sir Terence and his team at Conran & Partners. And it is manufactured by Christie-Tyler, Britain's largest furniture-making group best known for its G-plan range.

Content will be sold through Conran shops from the end of April and through leading department stores from the end of August.

Content is more than a range, it's a new brand, an ongoing project, with its own factory in Wales. With sofas from u800 to u2,000, it's designed very much for the middle market. And for the first time in years, here is good-looking, stylish, affordable furniture that's British, which comes with its own rugs and cushions. …
