SIR ALEX FERGUSON'S criticism of Arsenal as arrogant is the latest salvo in a war of words that has simmered between him and Arsene Wenger since 1997. Standard Sport recalls six of the best spats.

April 1997: Row during the title run-in sparks the long-running feud between the pair.

Ferguson wanted the Premier League to extend the season due to a fixture pileup, but Wenger refused to back the idea. He said: "They start to speak of an extension of the championship. That is just ridiculous."

August 1999: Wenger admits he loves winding up Ferguson. He said: "It is part of my personality to have fun and to jibe. It is harmless, competition is competition. I defend Arsenal and Alex Ferguson defends Manchester United.

I stand up to him, to anyone."

July 2000: Ferguson takes a double swipe at his Highbury rival for whinging about United getting preferential treatment and his antisocial attitude.

Ferguson said: "I don't think his carping has made a good impression on the other Premiership managers. …
