ACCORDING to Esso's Gordon Sawyer (Letters, 20 March), it would be "ridiculous" to claim that Esso has been encouraging an attack on Iraq.

Presumably, then, he will be announcing a halt to the funding of "front" groups that advocate war, groups such as the Heritage Foundation, which is calling for an attack to "protect Iraq's energy infrastructure - and ensure US and world energy markets have access to its resources".

Or the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy, whose incisive examination of the issues at hand has led it to conclude that "Western nations typically whip non-Western nations in war because of inherent cultural traits".

Cumulatively, such groups have received hundreds of thousands of Esso dollars.

Hardly surprising as a top City analyst at Deutsche Bank says Esso may find itself in pole position to benefit if Saddam Hussein is ousted. Mr Sawyer suggests Esso does not need a regime change because it already trades in Iraqi oil through the UN oil-for-food programme. …
